The Hidden Hazards of Fall: What Pet Parents Should Watch for Around the Home

As autumn settles in and homes fill with cozy scents, decorations, and holiday preparations, it’s easy to overlook seasonal hazards that can put our four-legged family members at risk. A little extra awareness can help keep pets safe while we enjoy everything fall has to offer.

From pumpkin spice air fresheners to plug-in fragrance pods and synthetic room sprays, fall scents are everywhere. Some products may irritate pets’ respiratory systems, particularly in poorly ventilated spaces. Keep fragrances out of reach and avoid exposing pets to strong artificial scents.

If you enjoy natural aromatherapy, choose products carefully and learn which essential oils are appropriate around your pets. Natural doesn’t automatically mean safe; the specific oil, concentration, and method of exposure all matter.

Candles and wax warmers also deserve caution. Curious noses and wagging tails can knock them over, while open flames and hot wax can cause burns. Keep them secure and never leave them unattended around pets.

Decorative pumpkins, gourds, and fall arrangements can attract curious chewers. Plain pumpkin is generally safe for dogs in appropriate amounts, but moldy pumpkins can cause illness, and large pieces of gourds may cause choking or intestinal blockages. Check seasonal plants before bringing them home, as some varieties are toxic to pets.

Halloween candy, baked goods, and seasonal desserts can hide serious hazards. Chocolate, grapes, raisins, and products containing xylitol, a sweetener found in some sugar-free candies, gum, and baked goods, can be toxic to dogs. Store sweets securely and check ingredient labels.

With Thanksgiving approaching, remind guests that not every holiday treat is safe for pets! Ask them not to share table scraps, cooked bones, or desserts, and keep plates and drinks out of reach. Give your dog a quiet, comfortable space to retreat if the gathering becomes overwhelming. A little guest etiquette goes a long way toward keeping everyone happy, healthy, and safe this Thanksgiving!

Take a few minutes to inspect decorations, secure tempting foods, and store candles and fragrance products safely.

If you suspect your pet has swallowed something toxic, contact your veterinarian or an animal poison-control service immediately. Don’t wait for symptoms to appear.

A pet-friendly home doesn’t mean giving up the comforts of fall. It simply means enjoying the season with a little extra care, and keeping our furry family members safe through every festive moment.
